I often travel with Christian leaders from around the world on retreats, where I serve as a translator—and paint every day. Cyprus has become a frequent destination, not only for its deep biblical history but also for its beauty, a place where I imagine any artist would long to stay and paint. During these retreats, I have painted friends who are wholly dedicated to serving others. In them, I often see light, joy, and determination. Just as often, I glimpse a childlike spirit—something I am especially drawn to capture.
What strikes me most is how people of faith are often less inclined to hide their true feelings. They seem more open, vulnerable, and in a way, freer. This spirit of vulnerability is something I deeply admire. It reminds me of early portraiture, from the Renaissance through the mid-19th century, where so many faces radiate not only dignity but also this quiet, beautiful openness.
